Smokin Out the Window

Silk Sonic

The third and final single, ‘Smokin Out the Window’ from the new album "An Evening with Silk Sonic" from the supergroup Silk Sonic, composed of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, sticks with the same theme as the other two, while showing all sorts of different colours the last two singles hadn’t already painted.

Structurally, this is their simplest song out of the three singles, not that that’s a bad thing by any means. It’s the most accessible, mostly staying in the same key and following the structure of a normal power ballad. Lyrically, however, it’s the most explicit with the same sort of tongue-in-cheek nature, although dialed up a few notches, as the other offerings by Silk Sonic. The instrumentation is very retro, naturally belonging with classic funk and R&B ballads from the late 70s. The tune also has the same texture as Motown classics the supergroup has successfully revitalized. It’s filled with gorgeous, soaring melodies sung by the industry veteran Bruno Mars, and raw, powerful chops both on the drums and on the mic by Anderson .Paak. There’s a subtle guitar graciously stroking chords, building the foundation of the track, with a popping bass line that makes the whole track move ever so smoothly. The strings that sit comfortably in the back of the track, as well as the percussive and brass instruments highlighting the punches in the chord progression are an absolute must, and add so much value to the authenticity this song exudes.

This song, while sounding a tad less special than the previous two, adds another slow jam to the already impressive catalog the supergroup has put out.
